Research Nurse / Research Assistant (Full-time or Part-time)

Applications are invited for appointment to the position of Research Nurse or Research Assistant to work in FRONTIER, a specialised research clinic at the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute for the study of frontotemporal dementia and related syndromes led by Professor John Hodges. The successful candidate will be required to recruit and follow patients into research studies designed to develop biomarkers for frontotemporal dementia.

Key areas of responsibility will include patient liaison, recruitment, follow-up and ensuring adequate clinical documentation, venipunture, minimal blood processing, specimen cataloguing and tracking, and initiating brain-only autopsy processing at the time of death (24 hour responsibility).

Essential skills:Degree or diploma in Nursing or an Allied Health/Medical Science discipline; Venipuncture skills; knowledge of database systems;, valid driver’s license; good organisational and time management skills with attention to detail; good interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work independently and within a team environment; knowledge of OHS responsibilities.

Desirable skills:Experience communicating with the general public and medical practitioners; an interest in neuroscience research; previous research experience

Technical Assistant - Genetic Repositories Australia (GRA)

Applications are invited for appointment to the position of Technical Assistant within GRA, an NHMRC enabling facility. GRA provides researchers with a central national facility for the processing, long-term secure storage and distribution of human genetic samples (DNA and cell lines). The successful candidate will be required to support laboratory activities by assisting with the production of immortalised human cell lines and DNA isolation for subsequent genetic analysis.

Essential skills:TAFE qualifications in Science; laboratory experience including sterile cell culture techniques; good communication and record keeping skills; ability to work within a team environment.

Desirable skills:Previous experience in blood processing, DNA extraction, cell line establishment and reagent preparation.
